Ovarian Health

The ovaries are the primary female reproductive organs fundamentally responsible for the reproductive functions. Hormonal secretion, storage of the ova, and regulation of the release of the eggs at period intervals. Common disorders of the ovaries include – ovarian cysts, polycystic ovarian syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency amongst others.

The symptoms associated with ovarian disorders typically include – pain in the lower abdominal and pelvic areas, heaviness in the abdomen, bloating, irregular & painful periods, possible weight gain, hormonal imbalances which can lead to male-pattern baldness, excessive facial hair, etc.

Some of the common causes that result in ovarian disorders would be pregnancy-related complications, infections of the pelvic region, pre-existing or previous ovarian cysts and others. Ovarian failure could also be a result of the loss of eggs (oocytes) from the ovaries. This is a result of chromosomal defects, exposure to toxins and chemicals, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, autoimmune conditions. In some cases, ovarian disorders can be idiopathic conditions, which means that they do not have an underlying cause associated with them.

The management of ovarian disorders involves both clinical as well as surgical interventions. Lifestyle modifications are also recommended, which includes – weight management, regular physical activity and adherence to a healthy diet.
